College aids hurricane victims

Students, faculty and staff of LeMoyne-Owen College contributed in aiding the victims of Hurricane Harvey with a collection drive from Sept. 5 to Sept. 20. Donors dropped off items daily in the student center.

“The goal was to collect items to send to Texas to show them that though we were not victims of Hurricane Harvey, we still felt an impact because of the loss that they suffered,” said Mekel Richardson, coordinator and volleyball coach.

The holding room for donations contains more than 100 cases of water, a multitude of cleaning supplies, feminine toiletries, baby wipes, diapers and ready-to-eat food. Amongst the donors were neighboring Union Baptist Church and an anonymous alumna.

“I honestly thought we would do okay; however, I am amazed at the outcome. We did way beyond what I imagined. I am so proud of LeMoyne-Owen,” said senior and former SGA president Issac Freeman.

Donations will be shipped to the designated location via UPS and distributed amongst the victims accordingly, Richardson said.
